León, Nicaragua
To start off the new year, participants in our Family Farming Program visited the municipal farm of the city of León. In partnership with BORDA; a German non-profit organization active in the fields of poverty alleviation, sustainable protection of natural resources, and the strengthening of social structures; our participants took a tour of the farm, learning about the importance of growing organic vegetables from home. Additionally, our participants learned about ways to better use their own land to farm organically.
Our participants were also shown the process of treating contaminated water for irrigation as well as turning manure into organic fertilizer. Both these processes can be used and sold to the general public to promote low-waste and organic farming.
Lastly, our participants learned about sales techniques and strategies to increase the value of their farm by taking on organic farming methods.
