Harvesting Hope in Guatemala

Celebrating a Year of Farms and Transformation in Guatemala

2024 will remain in our memory as the year in which we planted not only seeds in the ground, but also in the hearts of the families that are part of ViviendasLeón. This year, with enthusiasm, we inaugurated our Garden program, a dream that became a reality thanks to collective effort, passion for change and commitment to our community.

Ten women, representing ten families, became the first guardians of our organic gardens. Each vegetable planted not only nourishes their tables, but also their hopes. In these gardens, lettuce, spinach, carrots, radishes and other native foods flourish, rich in vitamins and nutrition. In addition, we went a step further with five brave women, who are responsible for hot houses where tomatoes and peppers grow, taking production to a new level.

Our goal with this program is not only to improve the nutritional status of our families, but also to strengthen family ties and foster a more stable economy. We are delighted to see how gardening is no longer the exclusive task of women. Now, husbands and children have joined in as well. Every watering, every harvest, and every shared smile is a reminder that a united family not only builds gardens, but also stronger communities.

This year we have learned that the power of a garden goes beyond the food it produces. It is a space for learning, teamwork, and transformation. Families now not only eat better, but also generate additional income by selling part of their production. But the most important thing is that they grow together, strengthening the fundamental basis of our society: the family.

As a grand finale to this year of achievements, we held an unforgettable closing day. We organized a nutrition workshop led by an expert nutritionist, who taught our families how to make the most of the food they themselves grow. In addition, we held a height and weight day to assess the impact on the health of the beneficiary families.

And the best came to the table: together, we prepared delicious savory pancakes with lettuce and carrots, as well as tortillas with beets and carrots, using fresh, organic produce harvested from the gardens. Seeing the families enjoy the fruit of their effort was a moment of pride and celebration.

Although we have made progress, we know that the road to food security for our community is long. But with each seed planted, we get a little closer. At ViviendasLeón, we believe that every effort counts, and every small change adds up. This year-end, as we reflect on our achievements, we also challenge ourselves to dream bigger. We challenge you, who are reading this, to imagine with us a world where every family has access to fresh, organic food, where every community thrives, and where every effort is rewarded with hope.

Together, we can make this dream a bigger reality in 2025.
