Water Security Supported by New Grant

In Nicaragua, water security is one of the core issues that ViviendasLéon aims to address in order to improve the livelihoods of people in rural communities. We recognize that having safe and reliable access to water is integral to smallholder farming, which in turn provides financial stability and nutritious diets for families. In Nicaragua, where the annual rate of rainfall has been steadily decreasing over the last 30 years, rural communities are at risk of losing their ability to sustain themselves and to develop economically through farming.

Thanks to a grant from the Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation, VivendasLeón can continue our work to improve wells in rural Nicaragua, as a part of our Rural Water Security Program. The Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation has been supporting community foundations and organizations involved with arts and culture, education, the environment, health, youth development, human services, international relief, and leadership development since 1997.

With their help, we plan to build 10 new family farms and to improve the capacity of the 10 existing hand-dug, manual family wells associated with those new farms. The farm portion of the project consists of the construction of perimeter fencing and material supplies to establish new farms, and the well project includes deepening the wells by up to 4 meters and enclosing the top of the wells to guarantee a more consistent, safe and sanitary water supply. These wells will provide a reliable source of clean water so that the family farms can continue to operate, even when rainfall is scarce.

We would like to once again express our deepest thanks to the Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation for allowing us to continue to strive towards our mission to support human and economic development.
