Karla Galeano on her success as a farmer since her start in 2015.
León, Nicaragua
Karla Galeano and her husband Álvaro live in Troilo with their two children Deybin Jonathan and Ariana. Her husband is a day laborer and she was a housewife. Before 2015 she had been depressed, socially isolated and unable to earn money to support her children in school.
That year she joined the capacity training program, learning about the value of education and women’s rights, leadership, gender equality and better ways to raise children. She became empowered, and capable of holding difficult conversations with her peers.
Once farming, she began to see the benefits of her efforts in better nutrition for her family, an earned income greater than her husband’s and a new, respected place in their family.
Today she has four farms producing enough for more than 150 members of her community. Her children are in high school and university expecting to have careers that will contribute to permanently changing the future of Karla’s family.

Karla Galeano: I am from Troilo. I live with my two children Deyvi and Ariana and my husband, Álvaro Francisco Arevalo.
The original benefit I received was the six months of capacity training, where I learned how to succeed in my garden, how to advance, how to sell my produce, and how to be a better mother for my children.
I also learned how to express myself. Before the training I was embarrassed to speak. When I went out in public I walked with my head down because I didn’t know how to talk to others. Through the training I have learned to be an independent woman and do things for myself without depending on anyone else.
Before receiving my garden, life was difficult and I worried about how we were going to manage my son’s studies and how we were going to manage to feed our family. My husband worked as a day laborer and was always sick; he had to go to the hospital and it was very difficult.
One of the changes in my family since receiving my first garden from ViviendasLeón is the income from producing vegetables that has enabled me to support my children, my husband and me.
When ViviendasLeón benefited us with my first garden, life changed a lot for me, my children and my husband. Today we focus more on the garden to ensure good production and have a better life than the one we were living.
