University of San Francisco
May 20 - June 2, 2018
ViviendasLeón and the University of San Francisco will partner again in 2018 on a 14 day immersion program in León. Intended as an inter-disciplinary program, students will work toward implementing projects developed during the previous semester in the International Development and Community Outreach (ARCD 345) course and other ongoing projects in the rural communities of Goyena and Troilo near León.
Students will develop knowledge of rural Nicaraguan cultural life patterns, vernacular systems and existing knowledge so they can work to blend traditional approaches with modern methods and materials. This process helps students to see design and planning as a powerful unifying tool in finding appropriate and sensitive solutions to addressing social needs, and preserving traditional culture and community, while enhancing the environmental and social welfare of rural populations. By assessing real world design problems, developing and proposing solutions and doing the physical work necessary to bring their work to fruition, students get a broad exposure to design and planning work, as well as the humanitarian contexts for their work.
Living in home-stays in León, students will enjoy the experience, cultural richness and warm hospitality of Nicaragua. Students will be able to practice their Spanish skills while having breakfast and dinner with their host families as well as when interacting with the community members.
