Spring Break Family Trip, April 16-23, 2017

April 16-23, 2017
Just over fifty participants from 20 families traveled with us to Nicaragua and spent the week working with the rural community and visiting local and regional sites. The families stayed with local host families where they learned about Nicaraguan culture and customs. The days began with guest speakers and then would be followed by cultural tours to museums and murals in the center of León. After having lunch at the office, the families went out into the community to work on our going development projects. The families participated in projects like the family farming, the youth carpentry program, honeybee cooperative, and the youth arts program. One of the kids on the trip said:

“You have a sense of accomplishment, building the fence for the model garden, and making the furniture.”

The families went on excursions to regional locations such as hiking up and sledding down Volcán Cerro Negro. The families ended the week by going up to the cloud forest of Miraflor, spending time learning about the flora and fauna in addition to working on farming projects too. Some of the closing thoughts from the trip include:

“You feel like you’ve made a change in the world.”
“The trip was the right mix of fun and work.”
“ViviendasLeón is building a sustainable community.”

After spending the last part of the trip in Miraflor, the families enjoyed their last evening celebrating with cultural music and food.
