San Francisco Friends School
March 23-30, 2018
ViviendasLeón and the San Francisco Friends School will enter their 8th year in partnership with each other to develop a Global Education Program for seventh graders that touches on the major themes of global citizenship, cultural immersion, community building, personal agency and international service. ViviendasLeón’s Global Education Program aims to introduce students to new ways of thinking as they embark on a service-learning experience that will increase their empathy, and understanding while helping build community amongst themselves and their global community. By having students navigate new situations the student will develop outwardly and will build skills to be an engaged participant in the 21st century. Students travel to León for four days working in the rural communities of Goyena and Troillo on projects ranging from food security farming to building construction and arts education. Living in home-stays in León, they experience the cultural richness and warm hospitality of Nicaragua. Students will be able to practice their spanish skills while having breakfast and diner with their host families as well as when interacting with the community members. In Miraflor they explore the biological diversity of the cloud forest and organic farming practices of local families working to preserve the environment that supports their way of life. ViviendasLeón’s Global Education Program uses our development philosophy to create meaningful and worthwhile service-learning experiences for educators looking to further widen their students’ perspectives.
