Lick Wilmerding High School
June 10-16, 2018
ViviendasLeón and Lick Wilmerding High School will partner again in 2018 to create a unique Global Education Program with a focus on service-learning. Students will live together in home stays in the neighborhood of Fundeci in Leon, traveling each day to visit important cultural and historic places, and to the communities where we work throughout the year providing sustainable development projects. ViviendasLeón’s Global Education philosophy is developmental with the aim to introduce students to new ways of thinking to help increase their empathy, understanding, and help build community while they are navigating a new situation.
Students will take part on our most important initiative, working side by side with community members on our development projects. Students will assist rural families on their farms, a program that has increased their food security and access to nutritious food. Students will help plant seeds, clean up the farm, harvest and even set up new farms for rural families. Opportunities to interact with the community's’ youth through our Youth Arts and Sports Program allow for students to interact with their Nicaraguan peers in a fun environment. Lick-Wilmerding students will also get the chance to experience Nicaragua’s natural beauty by hiking up the Cerro Negro volcano and swimming in one of Nicaragua’s famous crater lakes, Lago Apoyo. Through our Global Education Program, ViviendasLeón is preparing students with skills needed to be global citizens in the 21st century as they participate in meaningful and worthwhile service-learning experience in Nicaragua.
