Student Scholarship Program

Student Scholarship Program
Since 2009, ViviendasLeon has been sponsoring promising students in the Sutiaba communities, who need assistance to complete their education. The goal is to create a new paradigm for youth in the communities who have traditionally left school by the 6th grade and often married and had children before their 18th birthday.

We emphasize work with young women who are most vulnerable to leaving school, often pressured by their own families to marry and begin having children at a young age. Studies show that the longer a woman delays having children the more education she receives and the greater her long term prospects are, including those for her children when she finally does have a family of her own. The cost of one year of high school education is $500, including books, supplies, transportation and clothing, tutoring and other related expenses.

This program is funded by generous donation from individuals in our San Francisco and Bay Area community. In 2016 we hope to increase funding of this program through used clothing and shoe donations from our school partners that will be sold in our "Garage Sale" program that was launched in September 2015 in León.
