COABE Honey Bee Company
The Little Honey Bee Company began in March 2102, one of our projects to support the graduates of the Human Capacity Building program. Bee keeping is the key to a diverse agriculture environment, and is an important contributor to Goyena’s economic development.
The Cooperative started with 6 members and 5 hives. With increased technical knowledge, the Cooperative expanded to 10 hives by the first half of 2013. The original 5 hives generated 80 liters of honey with gross revenues of $400 – an enormous sum in a community where the average monthly income per family is $120. The Cooperative, like our other micro-enterprise projects creates jobs and stimulates the Goyena community’s local economy. The business is continuing to expand, with a goal of reaching 80 hives by early 2015.
