Goyena Agro-Forestry Project-Family farming
Agro-forestry projects, environmental education, reforestation and vegetable gardens are the key elements of this program to bring environmental restoration, food security and agricultural small business to the indigenous communities of Sutiaba. This project was developed in partnership with Trees for the Future and is designed to provide reforestation, hardwood and firewood trees for the community, train and support families to create farms where they grow vegetables, fruit and citrus trees and other agricultural products. Each family farm has a drip irrigated area of 2,500 square feet, producing enough food to create small food cooperative businesses that earn families a living wage for the first time in their lives. Student groups and interns participate in a number of activities related to this project including nursery construction, planting, harvesting and transplanting.
